Onion sets and shallots are planted from February to April and harvested in July and August; garlic is preferably planted in autumn and harvested in June and July. Professional cultivation: onion sets, shallots and garlic

Plant onion sets in rows 25–30 cm apart, 8–10 cm apart in the row, with the tip just above the soil. Shallots need more space, 15–20 cm in the row. Plant garlic cloves 3–5 cm deep, 10–15 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil; wet soil causes rot. Planting too early in cold soil can cause bolting.

Harvest when the foliage dies back and let the bulbs dry in a dry, airy place for good storage. Store the planting stock cool, dry and airy until planting. Read more about professional growing.
