Amaryllis (Hippeastrum)

Spectacular indoor flowering in winter
Hippeastrum is a spectacular bulb flower that is especially loved for its large, trumpet-shaped flowers and user-friendliness in pot culture. Under the commercial name ‘Amaryllis’ it has become a permanent fixture in the winter and Christmas period, but it is also popular for spring cultivation. Hippeastrum is suitable for both professional flower cultivation and consumer sales: the flowering is reliable, impressive and long-lasting. Available in a wide range of colours – from classic red to modern white-pink or striped – it is an ideal choice for indoor decoration, gift packaging and flowering pot plants. For growers it offers high added value with relatively little space and labour.
Hippeastrum – impressive blooms from a single bulb
Hippeastrum is known for its exceptionally large flowers – often up to 20 cm in diameter – that bloom on sturdy, hollow stems from a single bulb. The plant has few leaves during flowering, so all the attention goes to the flowers. Each bulb can produce 2 to 4 flower stems, each with multiple flowers, resulting in a long flowering period of sometimes up to 6 to 8 weeks.
The plant is mainly grown indoors and sold in the winter and early spring. Popular varieties such as ‘Red Lion’, ‘Picotee’, ‘Apple Blossom’ or ‘Double King’ offer variation in colour, flower shape and flowering time. Hippeastrum grows well in a warm, light spot and requires minimal maintenance, making it an attractive product for both growers and consumers.
