Daffodil bulbs (Narcissus): spring flowers for gardens, parks, retail and forcing

The daffodil (Narcissus) is the most important spring bulb after the tulip. Daffodils are planted in autumn and, depending on the group, flower outdoors from March into May; miniature daffodils from February. They are hardy, naturalise well and are not eaten by mice or deer. Holland Bulb Market carries more than 60 cultivars, from trumpet and double daffodils to tazetta, split-corona and miniature daffodils.

Uses

Gardens and borders: in groups or layered with tulips, hyacinths and muscari.
Parks and landscaping: daffodils return every year and are ideal for naturalising in grass, verges and woodland edges.
Retail: in capperlines, displays and pots; miniature daffodils are popular pot plants in early spring.
Cut flowers: long vase life. Note: freshly cut daffodils release a sap that damages other flowers. Keep them in water separately for a day before combining them with other flowers.

Professional cultivation: forcing in the greenhouse

For forcing we supply daffodils that receive 16 weeks of cold at 9 °C from week 40, of which at least 10 weeks planted for rooting. Suitable cultivars then flower from mid-February; cooling two weeks later gives flowering two weeks later. Cultivars suitable for forcing include Carlton, Dutch Master, Ice King, Tahiti and Golden Dawn. For warm regions in Asia we supply pre-cooled daffodils that flower in early February. Tazettas such as Ziva and Grand Soleil d’Or flower indoors without a cold period.
